The January Membership Meeting at Shoreview Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, 2865 Brighton 3rd St, Brooklyn, NY 11235 focused on the issue of Guardianship. Judge Loren Baily-Schiffman explained the purpose and procedure for putting an alleged incapacitated person under guardianship. Members of the audience gave examples of clients who were in need of help making everyday health and financial decisions. The judge offered suggestions as to whether a Guardianship might help, if prior documents held up or if a more informal arrangement could be made to spare the elder from losing their independence. Judge Baily-Schiffman explained that the main reason for placing a person under guardianship was if they were not able to make their own decisions or if there was evidence of financial or health care abuse. Everyone agreed that this was a most helpful program and a great benefit of SUN-B membership.
